Using VRIK, I have noticed that my avatar's arm will do an extreme twist between the elbow and the shoulder when I reach behind my head. In previous posts, the recommended solution for similar problems is to include the ShoulderRotator, but those posters were using FBBIK.

Is using the ShoulderRotator on the VRIK also the recommended solution or is there some other way?

ShoulderRotator is a script that makes FBBIK use the shoulder bone. VRIK already uses the shoulder bone so that is not the issue. Sounds like a problem with the direction in which the elbow is bent. Have you tried adding a Bend Goal? You can parent it to the hand controller, set Bend Goal Weight to > 0, hit play and adjust its local position until the bend direction looks right.
