Hi! I've bought the Synty Polygon City asset, which comes with a bunch of characters. However, when setting the skinned mesh renderer mesh to one of them, it loses the proper associations and ends up looking like below. What can I do? Thanks!
You can't just replace the mesh in a SkinnedMeshRenderer and expect it to work. SkinnedMeshRenderer ties the mesh to specific bone indices and those need to belong to the model that the mesh was imported with.
You'll have to set up that puppet from scratch (drag in the fbx, use BipedRagdollCreator to create the ragdoll and then add PuppetMaster and click on Set Up PuppetMaster). Tutorial here.
